Kayak for Clean Sweep!

I just signed up for Keep Austin Beautiful's Clean Sweep, a big volunteer day where people clean up a bunch of parks around town. As of now, there are still plenty of on-the-water spots left - you can paddle Town Lake and pick up trash, and get a t-shirt and free lunch for doing it!

Anyone want to join me? It's Saturday, April 5, from 9-11am (with an after party at 11:30). I signed up for a solo kayak at Texas Rowing Center. TRC, the Rowing Dock, and Zilker Canoe Rentals are all participating, and you can choose from solo kayaks, tandem kayaks, and canoes.

Should be great fun!

Help a sister out!

Hey all,

I don't often ask people to do things, but this is something I think you should all do. Those of you who are also myspace friends with me may have already seen some (or all) of the 747589438 bulletins I have posted on the topic.

SocialVibe is a new site (still in beta testing) that a couple of people I sorta-kinda know work for out in LA. I've been signed up for it for around a month now, and so far I think it is awesome. It is NOT a social networking site so it isn't one more thing you'd have to keep up with. Instead it works WITH your social networking sites (facebook, myspace, livejournal etc.). After you sign up you will be given the option to pick from a ton of 'sponsors' (different brands - right now I have Burton and Apple as mine), once you pick one you can choose from a variety of banners for that sponsor, then you will be given a code to put on your social networking site of choice. In return for having the banner on your site you earn points that will eventually be able to be traded in for prizes, and more importantly you also raise money for charity. By doing pretty much nothing. Some of the products also have prizes attached to them (e.g. I believe xbox has guitar hero 3 up for grabs right now, and last month samsung gave away a TV and apple gave away ipod nanos), the more days you have the banner for the product on your page the more entries you get for a prize drawing.

So, to summarize. sign up, put a pretty unintrusive banner on your myspace/facebook/whatever, earn points/prizes and raise money for charity. doooooo itttttttt!!!

p.s. it helps me get points if people sign up, so even if you don't think this is something you would want to use (which, are you crazy? raising money for charity just by playing around on myspace or something? pretty awesome in my opinion) please sign up anyway, if you decide not to put a sponsor anyplace that is fine, but at least check it out (the minimum I need from you is that you confirm your e-mail with them, that way you have officially signed up, after that it's totally up to you what you choose to do)!

Pretty please? SIGN UP HERE!

p.p.s If anybody has questions about this before they sign up let me know, and I will try and answer them for you...

p.p.p.s. thanks to Janelle, Suzanne and Mary who have already signed up :)

ANOTHER UPDATE: Weather Underground predicts that it will be 69 degrees at 10am tomorrow, and 83 at 1:00. Dress accordingly. :)

Meet at April's house at 8:15. Dear lord that's early.

In case anyone is curious, this is the evil portage I've mentioned ... you can see why we need a good number of people.

Actually those photos are from the exact stretch of river we'll be doing, if you want to get an idea of what it looks like.

We are totally going kayaking

Weather looks good, boats are reserved (right?) ... all we need is a place to meet. Last time we'd planned to meet at April's. Will that still work, April? If not, maybe we could meet somewhere else in the neighborhood, like around Fresh Plus? I'll probably be at Edward's tonight so that I won't have to drop Riley off in the morning, but there's no sense in everyone trekking down there when we're not all driving. Suggestions?

I think the only thing I forgot to mention in the last post is to bring a dry set of clothes for the ride home. Also, it was still coolish around 10:00 this morning and I think tomorrow is supposed to be a bit cooler than today, so dress accordingly.

Hotmail has been really funky today so I've been having trouble getting into my email. Probably best to post here or call me if you need to get in touch.

Make yer reservations

Sorry for the delay in getting this together. I just called TG Canoes and told them we'll have approximately six people calling to make boat reservations for this Saturday. Tell them you're with me for the 9:30 trip. Be sure you're definitely going, because you'll need to pay a deposit ($20 per boat) when you call and we're already past the refund period for cancellations. They're closed on Tuesdays, so call today! :) (or Wednesday. whatever.)

I'm thinking we can just do as we planned last time, meet here in town at 8:15. (April, still OK to meet at your house? Edward's not going, so that location should be convenient for everyone.) It shouldn't take more than an hour to get there.

At this point, the weather is looking GREAT! Low 80s and sunny. I recommend dressing in layers, preferably synthetics that will keep you warm even if they get wet. The paddling on this stretch of the river isn't too strenuous; you won't be as warm as if you were, say, biking or running at that temperature, and you might be wet. Your feet and lower legs, at the very least, will be in the water at some point. Wear shoes that will stay on your feet during the portages. Bring water and a snack. I'll bring my big dry bag so we can take along a jacket for everyone in case you get wet and cold.
You're all outdoorsy folks; I don't need to tell you what to do. :) Let me know if you have any questions.

Paddling ... ever?

So it sounds like October 20th might work for paddling? I think my work will have mellowed enough to let me have a whole day free (woohoo!), and there's a good chance it will still be nice and warm. April is out of town the following weekend, I'm hoping to do a 5K the weekend after that (and possibly the next weekend as well), and by then we're into mid-November ... so time is running short!

It looks like Dean is definitely going to spare us ... is anyone still up for going paddling this Saturday?

If it's too short a notice, I could also go Sept. 8 or 22.

paddling and hurricanes

Sorry I haven't posted regarding next Saturday's proposed kayak trip to the San Marcos; I've been trying to see what the weather is going to do. With Dean on the horizon, making reservations for next weekend seems dicey (I prefer for us, not the rental place, to make the final decision about whether to do a trip). I'm thinking we should wait until mid-next week to make concrete plans.
